> Does this breed make good family pets?
Rat terriers are the "least terrier" of the terrier breeds and tend to have an off switch, they often enjoy cuddling their family. All puppies are playful, this lowers with age. I usually place more confident and active dogs for hunting/acreage/sport homes. If there is already a dog in the home, I usually recommend the opposite sex.
> How many litters do you have per year? Wait-list?
I typically have three litters per year, from different dam's. Puppies are born in my bedroom, and spend the first four-five weeks of their lives there. To be on my official wait list I must receive a $200 non refundable deposit (although transferrable). Puppy picks are made at 45 days of age and in order in which deposits were received. I then guides which puppy would be a better fit.
> What should I expect for size? What is included with the puppy?
I breed standard rat terriers and mine tend to be 15-18" high at the shoulder. This breed can be fairly muscular and typically weigh 20-28lb.
Puppies all get examined by a licensed veterinarian at seven weeks of age; they receive their first set of shots, deworming, and microchip. They are CKC registration (non breeding). Dew claws stay intact, tails are usually docked as per breed standard.
> Visitations? Price?
I allow physical visits for official puppy picks with families that have deposits. Otherwise once puppies are vaccinated, this is to ensure biosecurity. Video chats are available.
Pricing depends on the litter and role for the puppy (pet vs performance vs conformation). Prices are $1500-2000.
> Do you have a health warranty?
I offer a two year health guarantee on congenital health defects and a two year guarantee towards hip dysplasia (terms/conditions apply).
I guarantee that puppies are DNA clear and not affected by PLL, PRA PRCD, DM, Hypothyroidism, CDPA.
> Are all your dogs shown on your website? Breeding rights?
Breeding dogs that are retired, in a guardian home or on a lease basis will not be displayed on my website.
I do not at this time sell any dogs for breeding purposes. Dogs placed are for pet/working homes only and non breeding contracts are to be signed.
> Do you ship/transport puppies?
Shipping is available via Westjet or Air Canada cargo to certain cities at 8-10 weeks of age. Up to two puppies may share a crate. Cost is approximately 400$. Some weather restrictions may apply in winter. Nanny companion services for me to physically bring the puppy are available (250-500$ fee + flight cost). For American homes, I recommend Seegmiller's kennels.
> Do you have specific hours? Updates?
I generally answer at any time of the day, but I am more available in the evenings. My Facebook page contains the most recent updates with many photos. I give lifetime breeder support to all my puppy families. If a puppy needs to stay longer than the agreed upon pick up timeline, a boarding fee of $15 a day will apply.
> What are your adults fed?
My dogs are usually on First Mate High performance/puppy or Lamb. My pregnant and nursing mothers are mostly raw fed.
